On the shore of the Aura River in Turku Finland Gallery Titanik is situated. Founded on February 29th 1988 in a space previously occupied by a public lavatory, Titanik, which concerns itself with contemporary art, provides the space for the Turku-based Artists’ Association Arte’s operation and at the same time serves as an alternative to the art life of Turku.
Titanik’s exhibitions and Arte’s projects show that Arte consists of artists who react to their environment and its events. Many of Titanik’s exhibitions have commented on Turku’s art and culture events as well as the city’s cultural policies.
Arte also runs the international new media artist residency programme Sumu. The studio for residency artists is adjoined to the gallery. At Supermarket, Titanik’s group of delegates is seeking for fresh viewpoints in running this non-profit gallery.
