- The aspiring art fair has become a force to be reckoned with

In only a few years Supermarket has become an international art happening of importance. This time the art fair will fill Kulturhuset in central Stockholm with a carnival atmosphere. Among the exhibitors are galleries from Montreal, Kiev, Västerås, Istanbul and Mallorca.
The word has got around about Supermarket and the unique showcase of artist run galleries and organisations that it offers. This has resulted in over a hundred applications to participate in Supermarket 2010 and the art fair has had to reject a large number of applicants. This time over 60 exhibitors from 24 countries will participate. Among the new participants are galleries from Turkey, the Czech Republic, Northern Ireland, South Africa, Canada, Switzerland and Spain. (See complete list of participants on our website).
- I am extremely pleased that galleries from Belfast and Cape Town have showed an interest in coming to Stockholm, says project manager Pontus Raud. These new contacts will broaden the public interest in art and bring new influences to the Swedish art world.
Supermarket Talks and SUPER-TV
As usual, Supermarket Talks will offer performances, lectures and seminars. This year’s theme is documentation and non-documentation. Why has documentation become so important, in some cases more important than the actual art work? This topic will be debated and investigated further at Supermarket Talks. And of course, everything will be thoroughly documented! Supermarket aims to reach out to a wide audience. New for this year is SUPER TV, Supermarket’s very own, home-made TV-channel, broadcasted online. It will feature live footage from the fair and interviews with exciting guests.
Why an art fair for artist run galleries?
It is becoming increasingly common for artists to take matters into their own hands and set up galleries and project spaces. Supermarket is an arena for such artist run initiatives. The aim is for Supermarket to be a place where a wider public can partake in what is happening on the artist run scene. The art fair wants to offer the visitor unexpected meetings and experiences rather than focusing on sales.
About Supermarket
SUPERMARKET has been arranged since 2007 by a small group most of whom are artists themselves. Supermarket is a development of Minimarket, which was held at Konstnärshuset in February 2006 in reaction to the new commercial art fair Market. The following year Minimarket expanded and became Supermarket. Supermarket 2007 occupied the entire building at Konstnärshuset and the following year the fair grew even more and moved into Enskilda Galleriet. In
2009 Supermarket checked into the Clarion Hotel Stockholm and this year the fair is moving to Kulturhuset, in the very centre of Stockholm.
