SUPERMARKET 2010 at Kulturhuset 19-21 February

It’s time again! SUPERMARKET art fair offers you a festival of painting, sculpture, video, performance, talks... and, naturally, you can also expect the unexpected....

From established names like Bill Drummond (the man who became a pop star with KLF in the 90s and then burnt the profit of one million pounds sterling) to the stars of tomorrow from the experimental art scene: R.E.P. from Kiev sells off the Ukraine on the cheap; Artillerie from Berlin shows a captured contemporary artist; Stockholm-based Candyland shows Bob Dylan. Those who want to be active and musical can Sew a Synth at Fylkingen or go to an audition at Galleri Syster or try out an electric guitar at Skånes konstförening.

SUPERMARKET’s fourth year involves more than 60 exhibitors from different parts of the world. 20 countries are represented, including France, Iceland, Canada, Serbia, Turkey, the Ukraine and the US. In a short time SUPERMARKET has become one of the world’s largest art fairs for artist-run galleries. And the driving force is not money: “Artists helping artists is an old concept and one could say that our fair is held together by this sense of companionship”, says founder Pontus Raud. “It is a form of idealism which is the fundament of free culture in Sweden”.

In only a few years Supermarket has become an international art happening of importance.
The word has got around about Supermarket and the unique showcase of artist run galleries and organisations that it offers. This has resulted in over a hundred applications to participate in Supermarket 2010 and the art fair has had to reject a large number of applicants. This time over 60 exhibitors from 24 countries will participate.

Kulturhuset is located at Sergels torg in the very centre of Stockholm. Since its opening in 1974 Kulturhuset has offered culture in all imaginable shapes. Supermarket Talks and SUPER-TV
As usual, Supermarket Talks will offer performances, lectures and seminars. This year’s theme is documentation and non-documentation. Why has documentation become so important, in some cases more important than the actual art work? This topic will be debated and investigated further at Supermarket Talks. And of course, everything will be thoroughly documented! Supermarket aims to reach out to a wide audience. New for this year is SUPER TV, Supermarket’s very own, home-made TV-channel, broadcasted online. It will feature live footage from the fair and interviews with exciting guests.

Artist-run galleries regularly staging public exhibitions in their own exhibition spaces and other artist initiatives can be invited to exhibit at SUPERMARKET 2010.
We never accept single artists. As a single artist we urge you to start a independent gallery or join some initiative of a kind.
