Much of Christian Sievers’ work is concerned with how the central issue of ‘security’ increasingly impacts on our interpersonal relationships. He moved to London on September 12, 2001, the day after the New York attacks, and everything was in flux. He experienced the preparations for the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, and also the London terror attacks of 2005. These common experiences have made any relaxed attitude towards risk impossible. Not to put on fluorescent clothing when cycling would be unjustifiable. After the end of all utopian ideologies the only thing we can all agree on is bicycle helmets.
The opaque and ambiguous is eliminated wherever possible. The side effects are well known; you don’t feel more but less secure. And being protected doesn’t mean you’re happy. The same technology also turns everything immaterial into its own reproduction. To have an image of something creates the feeling that this something is controllable or manageable. Talking about art one is time and again prone to forget that the immediate contact with the artwork is irreplaceable. Whether this soothes or unnerves is an altogether different question.
